Hopper car of American design first certified in Russia

26.08.2010

The Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant obtained a compliance certificate of the Russian Registry of Certification on Federal Railway Transport for a hopper car to haul mineral fertilizers of model 19-9835 with the axial load of 23,5 tf. A batch of railcars will be sent to OJSC “First Freight Company” for supervised operation.

The project for constructing the hopper car involved the North-American Company “Starfire Engineering & Technologies, Inc.” specializing in the design of rolling stock for railroads of the US and Canada.

The application of innovational technical solutions enabled to construct a railcar surpassing by its technical-economic parameters the domestic analogs, which will allow the owner to gain an additional profit from its usage.

The structural arrangement of the car body allowed to decrease the weight of the hopper car and to increase its capacity with ensured required strength and reliability of the design. The car body volume of the hopper car is increased by 7 cubic meters up to 101 cubic meters with retained existing standard length and dead weight, which will enhance its payload by 6-7%. The increased volume of pockets made it real to lower the center of gravity to improve the railcar stability against overturning, while the amplified dimensions of load hatches better the railcar lading conditions. The unified design of the hopper car enables to use it both with the standard domestic bogie and with the Barber bogie S-2-R with the axial load of 23,5 tf.

As part of the program on constructing the railcars of new generation targeted for manufacture the plant has already obtained three compliance certificates for railcars with the axial load of 23,5 tf – for hopper car 19-9835, solid-bottom gondola 12-9833 and drop-bottom gondola 12-9761
