Siemens receives order from TVSZ plant to supply static var compensator

13.05.2011 | SteelGuru.com

Friday, 13 May 2011The Russian CJSC Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant located in the town of Tikhvin, 200 kilometers east of St Petersburg has awarded Siemens Metals Technologies an order to equip the electric steel production line in its steel works with a SVC Plus static var compensator and 10 kV Switchgear. The investment is worth several million euros.

Under a contract to equip the TVSZ steel works with two 25 tonne electric arc furnaces a dust cleaning system and an alloying system Siemens will supply the static var compensator. It will minimize supply system disturbances to meet the strict specifications of the power supplier. It will also improve the performances of the electric furnaces while at the same time maintaining energy efficient operation.

The heart of the SVC Plus system is the power electronics based on IGBT modules with the same digital control used in high voltage direct current transmission. In conjunction with the filter circuits specifically matched to the operation of the electric arc furnaces, the SVC Plus effectively compensates for the reactive power generated during furnace operation. This enables the electrical power to be brought into the melting units optimally, and thus facilitates energy efficient, cost saving operation. An operator control and visualization system with user friendly visualization options and archiving functions will monitor the static VAr compensator and the upstream switchgear.

The Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant is regarded as a high tech innovation enterprise. This knowledge-intensive and high-technology project is being carried out with the assistance of the ICT Group of companies. The plant’s annual capacity is 13,000 railcars, 65,000 wheel sets and 90,000 tonnes of steel castings. The total investment exceeds USD 1 billion. Commercial production will be launched in phases during 2011.
